Deep-ocean Mining Technology: Development II
نویسنده
چکیده
A brief observation of the developments in mining systems and technology in the past 2 to 4 years is presented. Discussions on the development of other deep-ocean resources that are somewhat similar to nodule production also include gas hydrates, Cobalt-rich manganese crusts, hydrothermal vents and deep-ocean water upwelling (DOW). Previous reviews of deep-ocean mining can be found in Chung (1985, 1994, 1997, 2003).

It is important to establish an appropriate transporting machine on the seafloor for deep ocean mining of cobalt-rich manganese crusts, as the physiognomy of cobalt-rich manganese crusts is complex and often varies. In view of the complexity of terrain of cobalt-rich manganese crusts and huge weight that need to be supported during ocean mining, a project of the six−legged walking robot driven ...
متن کاملDevelopment of a fast simulation model for dynamic analysis of the 1000m deep ocean mining system∗
The configuration of a typical and may be the most prospective deep ocean mining system is an integration of a mining ship, rigid lifting pipe system, submerged pumps, a buffer storage, flexible hose system and a self-propelled seafloor tracked miner. The complexity of the total mining system and ocean environment makes its dynamic analysis very difficult to perform. To solve this problem, new ...

A 5,000-m-long, 15-in (38-cm) outer-diameter, full-scale pipe was deployed from the large Moon Pool of the Hughes Glomar Explorer (Fig. 1) while a deep-ocean mining system operated from the ship in the North Pacific Ocean in 1976 and 1979. From the standpoint of design as well as operation, one of the most critical parameters in deep-ocean mining and deep-ocean drilling is the behavior of the p...
متن کاملDeep-Ocean Mining Technology III: Developments
The review is an update from the review presented at the OMS-2005 (Chung, 2005). It includes discussions on the technical issues that have been already identified in the literature for manganese nodule production system design and on initial stages of crust mining concepts. It appears no new additional issues have yet been identified and solved. Recent discovery of the buried nodules would nece...
